Freeborn County is home to pioneers from many different nations. Their common denominator was the rich farmland and the related businesses that promised a good life for their families. When Lt. Albert Miller Lea surveyed the area in 1835 with the Dragoons of Fort Des Moines, he described sparkling lakes encircled by gently sloping woodlands, smooth prairies interspersed with shady groves and rich with the melody of feathered songsters–one of the most beautiful lands ever witnessed.

About the Author

The authors of this book present Freeborn County and its unique history in a style that invites the reader to traverse the county, looking at the beauty of today’s farmland and also at the dreams of the earliest settlers. In stories and photos from both the Freeborn County Historical Society and private collections, Freeborn County, Minnesota tells of its pioneers and the villages they planned, of the businesses they developed, and of the schools, festivals, churches, cemeteries, stagecoach roads, and railroads they supported.

I am pleased with my purchase. It is a 10 year old paperback book in excellent condition, no crease in the cover or inside pages. However, I thought the description when I found it on-line sAId that there were was no writing on the inside cover. When I got it, there was a handwritten inscription on the inside cover. As I got it for a present for a friend who is from that county in Minnesota, I wish I had known. That’s all. Otherwise, book was in pristine condition.

This book provided a wide ranging number of photographs and explanations of the history of Freeborn County. It was a little cursory and heavy on outlying towns. It was a bit short on Albert Lea, the County Seat, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

As part of my continuing interest in writing articles on old farm tractors and farm machinery, I purchased this book in order to obtain a picture of the Wilson Meatpacking Plant in Albert Lea, Minnesota. The book did not dissapoint. Their was a large aerial view of Wilson’s taken in about the 1950s. Albert Lea happens to be the county seat of Freeborn County.
