Description

Soul Asylum has been a leading force on the alternative rock scene since the 1980s behind Dave Pirner’s passionate and inspired songwriting. Beginning with his high school band, the Schitz, and then the precursor to Soul Asylum, Loud Fast Rules, Pirner’s songs have run the gamut from punk rock ragers to soulful ballads, from humorous ditties to intense social commentary.

Collected here, for the first time, are the complete lyrics from more than forty years of songwriting by Pirner. From Soul Asylum’s early Twin/Tone releases—Say What You WillMade to Be BrokenWhile You Were Out—through the latest, hot–off–the–presses release—Hurry Up and WaitLoud Fast Words offers firsthand commentary from Pirner reflecting on every album and every song from his repertoire. He leads you through the band’s early indie success and the songs that helped catapult Soul Asylum into the major–label mainstream with Hang TimeAnd the Horse They Rode in On, and the triple–platinum Grave Dancers Union, including the Grammy-winning “Runaway Train.” Two more albums in the 1990s—Let Your Dim Light Shine and Candy from a Stranger—were followed by three full–length records, two live albums, and several compilations leading up to the newest 2020 release. Pirner also digs into the vault and shares his recollections of the 1986 cassette-only release, Time’s Incinerator.

Loud Fast Words takes you inside the mind and creative process of one of America’s great songwriters. Dig into the words and meanings for more than 150 songs from this hugely popular and durable band.

I really enjoyed reading this book. Dave Pirner’s introduction to each song was great and I really liked knowing the backstory for each one. Dave is funny, insightful and sometimes a little irreverent. I would definitely recommend this book.

What a beautiful collection of lyrics and back stories. I especially enjoy the handwritten lyrics and drawings. Dave reveals honest and sometimes hysterical glimpses behind the scenes – gives me a whole, new appreciation of one of my favorite bands! (And corrects a few mistaken lyrics I have been singing for years… :)) Thank you, Dave!!

The book is exactly what it is, a collection of lyrics written by Soul Asylum’s lead singer, Dave Pirner. There is some additional material about the band’s beginnings along with a story on how each album came together. The more I read the lyrics and the meanings behind many of these greatly underrated songs, the more I appreciate not only Dave’s musical talents, but also his true gift for writing.

I devoured this book and have gone back to reread different parts so many times! Such an incredible lyricist, story teller, poet. Dave’s music, words and voice have meant so much to me my whole life so to have this come out was such a gift. Loved it, I hope he never stops writing!

If you’re a fan of Soul Asylum — you need to get this book. It provides wonderful insight into songs you already love and will enjoy even more when you fully understand Dave’s motivation behind them.

As a Minnesota native and longtime fan I was looking forward to this book but also thought it would just be another “lyric book”. I was thrilled to see it is so much more than that! The little stories, the memories all the things that make this band one of the best bands to ever come out of Minnesota.

A great book to have as a long time Soul Asylum fan! Only problem is Cartoon was not included as it was written by Dan Murphy.

Exactly what I expected. Great to have all Dave Pirner lyrics in book form along with song meanings and/or anecdotes. So glad to have this.
